African Child Day: Children Walk Home with Smiles

Kindu, 16 June 2011,
The children came from one of the three communes in Kindu town to celebrate the African Child Day this year. In their cheerful mood they sang melodious tunes and danced. The event itself took place in Alunguli and attracted over a hundred pupils and students drawn from 24 primary and secondary schools in the Alunguli community.

This year's celebrations were organised by the Public Information Division of United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO) in Kindu in collaboration with the Young Men's and Women's Christian Association that had been working with children based in Alunguli.

After the singing and dancing, the children were engaged in a quiz competition with questions based on the role of the MONUSCO in their community. At the end they walked home with gifts which included exercise books, mathematical sets, pens and MONUSCO printed materials.

The Mayor of Alunguli, Mwami Amisi Wabula who was present at the ceremony lauded MONUSCO's efforts in assisting children in his community. He congratulated the children for their brilliant performance during the competition and urged them to make good use of their gifts.

He reminded parents and teachers of their responsibility towards the good upbringing of the children.
