Sidikou, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MONUSCO, expresses concern over the arbitrary arrests and detentions which occurred in different parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), following peaceful civil society mobilization to protest delays in the publication of the electoral calendar and call for the holding of elections before the end of the year.

    26 Jul 2017 - Goma, 26 July 2017 - Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka, founder and leader of Nduma defense of Congo (NDC) has surrendered Wednesday 26th July to MONUSCO in Mutongo, approximatively 10 km North of Walikale, North Kivu. He has been transferred to Goma. Sheka is wanted since 2011 under a national warrant for crimes against humanity including for mass rapes.

    26 Jul 2017 - GENEVA (26 July 2017) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on Wednesday announced the appointment of Bacre Ndiaye (Senegal), Luc Côté (Canada) and Fatimata M’Baye (Mauritania) as international experts on the situation in the Kasai regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bacre Ndiaye will serve as chairperson of the team of experts.
  • Closure of 5 fixed bases in the North-Kivu province for the purposes of more flexibility and mobility
    19 Jul 2017 - Kinshasa, 19 July 2017 – Within the framework of its change of mode of operations, MONUSCO will close, as from 31st July, five fixed bases in the territories of Walikale, Masisi and Lubero in the North-Kivu, says the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in DRC, Maman Sidikou. Those bases are located in Walikale-centre and Bunyapuri (Territory of Walikale), in Masisi-centre and Nyabiondo (Territory of Masisi) and Luofu (Territory of Lubero).

  •  UN calls for an end to the violence in the Kasai provinces
    02 Jun 2017 - Kinshasa, 2nd June 2017 – The crisis in the Kasaï provinces, situated at the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has a disastrous impact on the local communities. The United Nations is seriously concerned by the continuing crisis and its impact on the populations’ survival. More than one million people are currently displaced due to the violence plaguing that part of the DRC.
  • 17 May 2017 - Kinshasa, 15 May 2017: Following the statement made at its press conference on 10 May regarding the protection of Dr Mukwege, MONUSCO wishes to clarify that it does not provide 24H protection to Panzi hospital and that this task is carried out by the Police Nationale Congolaise (PNC).

    30 Apr 2017 - Kinshasa, 29 April 2017: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Head of MONUSCO, Maman Sidikou, takes note of the latest political developments in the DRC and urges all Congolese stakeholders to work towards the swift and full implementation of the 31 December Agreement. He further notes that several but not all the signatories of the New Year's Eve Agreement signed the Special Arrangements.
