Goma 11-04-2015: MONUSCO Force Commander General Carlos Alberto Santos Cruz has presided over a Medal Parade at MONUSCO Lava site compound in Goma on 11 April 2015 . The Parade was accompanied by a medal award in recognition to the meritorious services rendered by over 41 United Nations Peace Keepers from contributing Countries in the Peace Keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Prior to the Medal award General Santos Cruz commended the men and women with various grades and backgrounds from the five continents of Europe, Africa, North and South America and Asia for their Courage , Bravery , Good will and enormous sacrifice to the United Nations and DRC in order to restore Peace, the Protection of Civilians, Restoration of state authority and Good Governance.

The Force Commander added that the medals were also in the realization of every soldier’s / (Peace Keeper’s )child hood dream, and achievement / Pride to his/or her country , adding that they had left their families , wives , children and loved ones to contribute their quota to bring Peace to Congolese who have been living in war and insecurity for so many years.

He said the Peace Keepers have also during their stay brought smiles to some face as they worked very closely to the population.

MONUSCO Force Commander ended his speech with some regrets because he said “ most of you will be leaving shortly as you have come to the end of your assignment” and this is going to create some vacuum until there can be replacements.

The ceremony ended with the award of medals to the Peace keepers by the Force Commander, deputy Force Commander General Jean Baillaud , other Military hierarchy and group photographs..
