Journalists of Kisangani, Province Orientale, trained to advance women’s cause

Kisangani, 30 January 2013 – A capacity-building workshop for journalists on advancing the cause of women's rights was organized in the town of Kisangani, Province Orientale, on 29 January 2013, at the initiative of the Network of Associative and Community Media of Province Oriental (REMACPO), with the support of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The workshop, which was set up around the theme "Women and media: How can media participate in improving women's lives and rights in Kisangani?", was attended by about 20 journalists from the audio-visual and print media in Kisangani, the provincial capital.

MONUSCO's objective in helping REMACPO to organize this training was to provide journalists with the tools necessary to properly do their work on the issues facing women, and to enable REMACPO to provide more space for women's issues, in their print media, and television-radio broadcasts.

The issue of women's rights is acute in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and particularly so in Province Orientale. For this reason, several presentations given during the workshop, were dealing with a range of related subjects, including, "Taking stock of the situation of women's rights in Kisangani", "The issue of women's access to media: The case of Kisangani."

At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants pledged to turn the lessons learned into action in order to better confront the impediments to the advancement of women in the province.
