Kinshasa, 27 May 2011 – The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) celebrated Peacekeepers' Day in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on 27 May, two days ahead the official date for this occasion.

The Highlights of the ceremony, which took place in the presence of several Government authorities, included a flag raising ceremony; the rendition of the Congolese national anthem and the anthem of the United Nations.

The Secretary-General's message was read by his Deputy Special Representative in the DRC, Ms. Leila Zerrougui, while the DRC government's statement was read by Mr. Simon Bulupiy Galati, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Posts, Telephones and Telecommunications.

A drama sketch on the Mission's mandate was performed by Tuma-Haut, a local theater group to climax the day's activities.

This is the tenth year that the UN is celebrating its Peacekeepers to honor their contribution to peace and human dignity throughout the world, and also to remember those who perished while on duty. Currently, there are 18 peacekeeping operations around the world. This year's theme is "Rule of law."
