Kindu Celebrates Peacekeepers’ Day

Kindu, 29 May 2011
– To kick start the Peacekeepers Day celebrations in Kindu today, a minute silence was observed for those who lost their lives while serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the year. This was followed by the reading of the United Nations Secretary-General's message for the occasion.

This year's ceremony attracted not only staff members of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), but also other UN family staff members, provincial authorities, representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations and members of the civil society.

In his contribution at the ceremony, the provincial Interior Minister, Kawaya Toussaint, commended MONUSCO for its contributions to the achievement of peace and security in the province and for helping to alleviate poverty in the region through its Quick Impact Projects. Mr. Kawaya Toussaint also lauded the Mission's support for the Government's efforts in making both the National Police force (PNC) and the National Defense Forces (FARDC) more professional through various training exercises.
