In Kirumba village, Nord Kivu, Sport Features High in Celebration of Labor Day

Goma, 3 May 2011 – As the saying goes, sport helps build human relations and prepares the youth to be useful members of their communities. This was also true for Kirumba village on the occasion of Labor Day, which was celebrated here on 2 May.

Kirumba is located in eastern Nord Kivu province, some 190 km north of Goma, the regional capital.

On the occasion of this year's celebration of Labor Day, Peacekeepers stationed in the area organized a marathon for the local youth. Eighty young men from the localities of Kirumba, Kaseghe, Matambe, Kalonge, Alimbongo, and Kasango, took part in the race. Many other villagers came out into the streets to show their support, and to be in tune with the spirit of sportsmanship on this day.

The Peacekeepers and elements of the Congolese National Armed Forces (FARDC) together with the National Police (PNC), provided security throughout the race, while serving refreshments to the runners.

The idea of this celebration came about in an effort on the part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) to promote peace, and induce a sense of community development.

The celebration ended with peace messages. One of these was delivered by the chief of the Indian contingent who said: "Peace is a much-sought-after commodity in this part of the country. More of these activities are needed to sensitize young people on the benefits of peace and community life."
