MONUSCO Chief on Official Visit to Goma


Goma, 4 May 2011
– The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Roger Meece, arrived in Goma, Nord Kivu province, on Wednesday afternoon for his second official visit to the region in less than two months.

During his stay, the Head of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) inquired about progress in the electoral process in Nord Kivu.

Speaking to journalists on arrival at Goma airport, Mr Meece said he wished to see the voter registration process in the province pick up speed. He also urged national political actors for more engagement in the process.

Mr Meece was also briefed on the security situation, which, without a doubt touched on recent attacks by armed groups in Nord Kivu's territories of Walikale, Rutshuru, and Lubero.

His visit here comes a month after MONUSCO's plane crash which cost 19 lives from this province alone.

Mr Meece left Goma on Thursday, 5 May, for Bunia in Province Orientale
