MONUSCO Force Commander awards UN Medals to Nepalese peacekeepers

Bunia, 25 June 2018 – MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant-General E. R. Martins Filho presided over UN Award Ceremony in honor of Nepalese peacekeepers of the 21st engineering company at the end of their mission In Ituri.

 

Addressing the audience, Lieutenant-General Filho explained “Today’s ceremony is aimed to honor the peacekeepers who serve with dedication and professionalism in hostile environments in a bid to restore peace and to alleviate the suffering of civilian populations in the conflict zones; by doing so, they help MONUSCO to fulfil its mandate.’’

 

He further said the peacekeepers of the 21st Nepalese engineering company in Ituri have rehabilitated 18.370 km road section from Tshabi to Kakuka; 20 km road section from Bunia to Bogoro and 18 km road section from Kamango to Similiki which were instrumental in the community reconciliation and enhancing social and economic activities in the Ituri province.

 

Besides roads rehabilitation, peacekeepers of the 21st Nepalese engineering company have also provided operational and logistic support to the north sector and engaged in facilitating the realization of MONUSCO-funded quick impact projects to respond to the needs of the population, said MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant-General E. R. Martins Filho.

 

Nepal, one of the largest troop-contributors to the United Nations deployed one infantry battalion and one engineering company to MONUSCO. Known for their courage and bravery, Nepalese peacekeepers, have indeed shown high-level dedication and professionalism while serving in UN missions, highlighted MONUSCO Force Commander.
