MONUSCO makes a donation to women detainees at Kisangani central prison

Kisangani, 16 March 2012 - As part of activities marking the month of March, which is dedicated to women, the Kisangani Office of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) donated food and non-food items to female detainees at Kisangani central prison on Friday, 16 March 2012. The donation consisted mainly of mattresses, treated mosquito nets, bags of rice, buckets and mugs.

In his speech on this occasion, the Head of the Kisangani Corrections Unit of MONUSCO, Moussa Diomande, representing the UN Mission Head of Office, said this action was part of the celebrations for the month of March.

The Kisangani central prison currently holds twelve female inmates, who were the recipients of these donations. The organizers of this event took advantage to induct the women on the principles of responsible citizenship, sexual violence, HIV/AIDS and gender-based discrimination.
