MONUSCO Police Chief visits eastern sectors, announces new training projects for local police

Goma, 2 February 2011 – The United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) Police Chief has announced plans to launch new training projects for Congolese police officers, under UNPOL supervision.

General Police Inspector, Wafy Abdallah, made the announcement during his five-day working visit to the sectors of Kisangani, Goma and Bunia, which he started on 31 January, 2010 and ended on 4 February, 2011.

General Wafy, who was accompanied on this trip by Martin Lunuyuy, Head of the Internal Investigations Unit, sought to get a better sense of realities on the ground. He, therefore, interacted with UNPOL staff as well as with regional commanders of the Congolese National Police.

At each stage of the visit, General Wafy encouraged UNPOL staff to cultivate a spirit of professionalism and self-abnegation.

In Goma, he visited the training Centre of Munigi, where 500 Congolese Police trainees, including 23 women, are on a 45-day training programme provided by UNPOL instructors.

General Wafy took the opportunity to announce plans to launch new training projects at different instruction centres, including Kapalata in Kisangani, Kasangulu in Bas-Congo province, Jules Mkoké in Bukavu, Kasapa in Lubumbashi, and one in Bunia.
