MONUSCO Trains National Police personnel for Security of the Electoral Process in DR Congo

Bunia, 18 September 2013 – The Police of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), in collaboration with the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI), undertook in Bunia, Ituri district, on Monday 16 September 201, a cycle of training for Congolese National Police (PNC) personnel on the provision of security for the electoral process.

Sixty PNC officers, including one woman, will follow the two-week training course undertaken with a view to the upcoming provincial, municipal and local elections. The training is designed to provide adequate knowledge of the various legal instruments relating to the organization of elections, with an emphasis on the provincial, municipal and local elections, and the various phases of the electoral process in the DRC, the role of the Congolese National Police before, during and after the elections.

Other training topics include: the provision of security for the electoral process, the protection of electors and candidates, the organization of the State, gender, sexual violence, general penal law, emergency assistance (first aid), police ethics, professional and technical actions authorized during an intervention, general information, and public order restoration and maintenance.

Similar training courses will be held in the days to come for other Congolese police units in the interior of the Ituri district. All the trained police personnel will then be ready for deployment to the various voting centers and offices when the time arrives.
