Bukavu, 26 April 2011 – The Congolese National Police (PNC)'s Provincial Inspection of South Kivu on Tuesday, 26th April received a consignment of office equipment and other items donated by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office and the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

The donated consignment consisted of office desks, desk chairs, consumable office supplies, and other equipment items including bicycles and power generators. These items were meant for police stations and sub-stations in the territories of Mwenga, Shabunda, Idjwi and Fizi.

The equipment, which was procured at the cost of U.S. $ 8,000 and funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), was donated as part of MONUSCO's support to PNC efforts to fight against impunity for sexual violence.

As Mr Cherno Jallow, interim head of MONUSCO's South Kivu office, presented him with these items, the PNC Provincial Chief Inspector of South Kivu, General Gaston Luzembo Nsimilaka expressed his appreciation for this generous gesture. He thanked MONUSCO and other partners for helping in providing "the means for the Congolese police to carry out the tasks assigned to them."
General Luzembo also said he would ensure that the equipment received was put to good use.

For its part, the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country's efforts to strengthen the capacity of its police force, in particular with regard to the fight against impunity for sexual violence.
