UN Medals Awarded to 1842 Bangladeshi Peacekeepers in Bunia

Bunia, 27 July 2011 - the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in DRC, Roger Meece preided a medal award ceremony during which 1842 Bangladeshi peacekeepers based in Ituri, Eastern province were awarded medals in recognition for their outstanding services under the UN flag.

In his speech, the Chief of the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) paid tribute to the Bangladeshi peacekeepers as well as the Congolese authorities for the work achieved in restoring peace to Ituri.
He highlighted that a remarkable progress was achieved with an effective participation of the Government institutions: the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Congolese National Police (PNC).

He further said as long as the threats posed by militia groups to the civilian populations continue, we shall be under obligation to do something in partnership with Government institutions with a view to halting the threats from the armed groups still active in the district and ensuring that civilian populations are indeed protected.
