CIDA Assists Congolese Justice

Bukavu, 31 May 2011
– With human rights violations being one of the main challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), in collaboration with the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), has been supporting the national judicial system in its efforts to end impunity stemming mainly from sexual violence. It is against this backdrop that CIDA funded the purchase of equipment worth US $6400 to the Sud-Kivu Provincial Justice system.

The funds were used by the UNJHRO to provide the equipment which includes a variety of stationery items as well as printers, photocopiers and generators. These materials are expected to be shared among the offices of the court registrar, the prosecutor and the military courts of the Sud-Kivu province.

CIDA representatives said the initiative will soon be extended to the territories of Uvira and Fizi.
