MONUSCO finances the construction of detention facilities for female in Bunia

- As part of the Quick Impact Project (QIP), MONUSCO Guatemalan Special Forces contingent undertook the construction of detention facilities for females in Bunia. The initiative was in response to a request from the public prosecutor of the Ituri district, supported by MONUSCO Rule of Law section. This project will provide female detainees with a safe accommodation before standing trial.

With a funding of 13, 000 USD from MONUSCO, this QIP is part of the efforts to help restructure the DRC prison system. The project consists of the building of detention facilities to house a total of 50 female inmates. The building will be located close to the public prosecutor's office. The facilities will provide female detainees adequate living conditions and safety, and prevent promiscuity with male teenagers. Female detainees are currently sharing space with male teenagers

MONUSCO Rule of law, GUASFOR and Ituri prosecutor express their will to improve conditions and bolster security in the penitentiary premises. According to GUASFOR Cimic officers such a project will contribute to maintaining peace and security in their area of responsibilities.

CIMIC activities contributes to create a positive image of MONUSCO among local authorities. The project should be completed within 12 weeks. After completion, it will be handed over to the local judicial administration

According to Erivan Santiago, head of MONUSCO Rule of Law in Bunia, "This project will have an important impact in enhancing the State authority and improving the respect to the rule of law in Ituri. This initiative reflects the commitment of MONUSCO to accomplish its mandate".
