Prosecution for international crimes at the center of discussions in a meeting held in Kisangani

Kisangani, 8 March 2016: Magistrates of civil and military jurisdictions in the South Kivu and Ituri are currently participating in a two-day workshop in Kisangani, Tshopo province organized by UNDP under the theme ”Mapping technics and drafting of a strategy on the prosecution of international crimes”.

The purpose of the training is to provide magistrates with empower magistrates to autonomously draft a strategy on the prosecution for serious crimes, especially the crime of sexual violence in conflict times.

Discussions focus on the serious crimes reported to the South Kivu and Ituri military court, from January 2009 to October 2015, which have not been tried yet by the courts.

The workshop is organized with financial support from the United Nations expert team for the rule of law and sexual violence in times of conflict in collaboration with the international Center for Transitional Justice, the Justice Support section and correctional administration as well as the UN joint Human Rights Office.
