Martin Kobler Head of MONUSCO in Goma: “New attacks on Goma will not go unpunished”

Goma, 24 August 2013 – Fire fight resumed early this morning between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the rebel Movement of March 23 (M23) at Kibati (15km from Goma) in Nyiragongo territory. Two (2) mortar bombs fired by M23 landed at NDOSHO quarter in the town of Goma causing the death of three (3) civilians, wounding several inhabitants and creating important material damages.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Martin Kobler, currently in Goma, declares "I firmly condemn these indiscriminate and unacceptable attacks against the civilian population. I have ordered the MONUSCO Force to react in the strongest terms possible to these horrifying and unqualifiable crimes."

MONUSCO renews its unwavering support to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The MONUSCO Force will take all necessary actions in its possession to protect civilians. "These aggressions against civilians will not remain unpunished", said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in DRC.
