MONUSCO provides clean water to Mbandaka University hospital

Mbandaka, 2 June 2012 – The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) inaugurated on Peacekeepers Day a water pump at the University hospital of Mbandaka, the capital of the Equateur province.

Prior to this project, women were forced to deliver under extremely poor conditions, with all the risks that it entailed. The Quick Impact Project, which is valued at $ 11,600, consisted of digging a well, and installing a pump and a water tank to provide clean and safe water to the hospital.

As part of the Peacekeepers' day celebrations, a mixed team of military and civilians from MONUSCO also visited the local orphanage Notre Dame du Sacré-Cœur, which hosts 30 children. Following the visit, the UN staff gave food stuff and household appliances to the center.

A soccer match was organized at the end of the day, opposing a team of the National Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) to MONUSCO.
